With a focus on product marketing, M&A integration, revenue ops and demand generation

Why customer opinions matter less than you think

Karina didn’t launch her denim brand by analyzing spreadsheets. She launched it by solving a personal frustration.

She wanted premium jeans that women could comfortably wear from morning through dinner. What followed wasn’t endless planning—it was raw execution: prototypes, fabric tests, fit changes, waistband tweaks, and manufacturing hurdles.

Watching KarinaJ Denim come to life up close completely shifted my perspective on growth. Coming from established tech companies where planning is king, I was reminded that startups thrive on a totally different engine: build, measure, learn.

My biggest takeaways from the front lines of a new business:
– Behavior > Opinion: What customers do matters infinitely more than what they say. Repeat purchases and word-of-mouth are the ultimate validation, not surveys.
– Thoughtful Bets: Being “lean” means placing a few calculated bets on pricing, marketing, and inventory, then doubling down ONLY on what gets traction.
– The Feedback Trap: The hardest skill is knowing when to listen and when to filter out the noise so you don’t lose sight of the original vision.

The biggest lesson? You don’t need all the answers to start. You just need a clear hypothesis and the discipline to adapt as you learn.

About me: I believe that the Achilles heel for most software companies is a lack of good execution in areas that drive growth/generate value – product marketing, M&A integration, revenue operations and demand generation. So, I started a focused consulting practice to help SaaS and enterprise software clients address their issues in these areas. The blog posts are based on my client engagements, as well as senior leadership roles in these areas. My bio is at https://www.linkedin.com/in/applicationsmarketing/
